What does Gastroenterology mean?
A literal definition of the word gastroenterology is the study of the gastrointestinal tract. As such, Gastroenterology is a medical discipline that deals with the health and function of the digestive system, also known as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. As such, organs that this field of medicine specializes in treating and evaluating include the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, colon and rectum. Gastroenterologists evaluate the movement of material through the stomach and intestine, how well the body digests and absorbs nutrients, as well as waste removal. Procedures and services that gastroenterologists provide include colonoscopies, upper endoscopies and more.
In addition to medical school, gastroenterologists are required to complete a three year internal medicine residency program, followed by an additional three years of training in gastroenterology. Dr. Ilysa Diamond, DO also completed a subspecialty fellowship in inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Ilysa Diamond, DO, is a board-certified gastroenterologist with over 15 years of experience in treating a wide variety of gastroenterology conditions and illnesses with compassion and expertise!

With an upper GI endoscopy (EGD), a flexible tube called an endoscope equipped with a tiny light and camera is put into your mouth and throat and slowly pushed through your esophagus and stomach until it reaches your duodenum. Before the EGD, patients are given anesthesia so that they do not feel anything during the procedure. Upper GI endoscopies are performed to provide direct visualization of the esophagus, stomach, and small bowel to check for bacterial infections, inflammation, ulcers, and other abnormalities. The procedure typically takes around 15 minutes to complete.
